The life, style, and derp of a small-town girl. Dress-up misadventures, crafting frustrations, and little obsessions can be found here.

This blog is full of my face. You have been warned.

Bringing Back Wonderland
I didn’t get to post about it the other day, but December 17 was my “Lolita Birthday.” It was on that day, back in 2010, that I first got to wear lolita fashion. It was admittedly a sub-par coord and I will forever keep the pictures buried, but it’s what really pulled me in.
Lolita fashion is my personal Wonderland. I get to try things that I normally wouldn’t, sewing-wise. I get to see a lot of beautiful, quirky, and creative outfits from the worldwide community. I’ve even made friends because of it, people who I hold close to my heart.
The past year or so has been interesting for me. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t just dress up and have photo shoots all the time. XD I switched jobs (from ESL teacher to Executive Assistant), I’ve learned things the hard way, survived a couple of heartaches, and had my share of little victories. I’ve been writing for Scene Index for a couple of months now, and I’m trying to make time to update this blog and my (currently dusty/semi-deserted) doll blog.
One thing I’ve noticed is that I struggle to be happy. Sure, I’m generally happy, but not “I’m so happy I could die” kind of happy. Nothing drug-induced, I’m just after that natural high when I’m having fun. Then I figured it out: I wasn’t dressing up as much, particularly lolita.
Each time I don the frills and poofiness for a shoot, I start feeling happy. Okay, first I get irritated because the tights are too tight, and the petticoats are too poofy, and why-can’t-I-get-this-dress -to-zip-up? THEN I start getting all the feelings of happiness as I look at the mirror and nitpick the details on my outfit. I feel like a cupcake-princess-poof-fairy and everything’s just fine.
It might seem like a shallow thing to other people, but I have been dressing up - whether in costume or “unusual” fashion - ever since I was young, and that’s something that I will not let go of easily. It’s a part of me, and it’s part of what keeps me happy.
I hope I get to dress up more in 2014, because I’d really like to bring back my Wonderland.
Cheers.Vanessa

I have… “cat moments”
I am easily distracted, usually by shiny things. Or cake. Yep.
This is another shot from the Colors shoot I had with David a couple of months ago. There are several more “cat moment” shots - and plenty of ugly faces I made - from this set, but I’ll stop at one. I don’t think the world is ready to see a full compilation of all my awkweird faces yet. XD

Colors, BAM!
Lately I’ve been going with more neutral stuff when it comes to wigs and clothes. Sometimes I’m just too lazy to coordinate something more interesting. XD I believe this might be my most recent “colorful” outfit, which I came up with for my friend’s photography finals shoot. He said the theme was colors, so I gave him colors. O u O
And yes, I do enjoy making silly faces during shoots. Sometimes those shots are even better than the “srs bznz” stuff. Besides, who could resist goofing off when they’re shooting with their best friend?

Project: Siren Song (update 1 - gown)
Would you believe this tiny-looking thing fits ME? This is the base gown, done by Elma Tejada.  I’m still going to do a good bit of beadwork on it, but I’m so happy that my design is finally an actual garment. It’s exactly how I wanted it, and my alteration requests were accommodated.
Still ironing out the other details of the overall look, but I’m definitely happy with where this is going. I can’t wait to shoot in this! This is one of several projects that I’ve wanted to execute this year, and I will definitely push through with it soon. :D
I’ll be posting WIP pics of beadwork and the other details, so follow my blog if you don’t wanna miss the updates! :) ‘Til next time~
Cheers,Vanessa

A Different Alice
Made this dress over a year ago, and I miss it so much! It got lost when I moved. :( It was inspired by Alice, but I didn’t want to go with plain blue. :P
I think I’ll be re-doing it, possibly with a different fabric, since I’m not sure if I still have any of this one lying around. Slowly getting back into making dresses again. <3
This was shot for my entry in GLW’s Spokesmodel Search last year. I didn’t win, but I did gain a lot of awesome friends from it!

Ice Queen (shot by Kat Langomez)

I joined a spokesmodel search last year, and made it to the final round. We were required to submit a new shot, so I ran off and dragged Kat to shoot. XD

I wanted to try something different from my usual looks, so I decided to expose my legs and shoulders (which still feels weird to me, btw). After Kat showed me these shots, I was happy with them, BUT I felt they might be too risque to enter in the competition.

Some of these pics haven’t been posted on my page yet, so here’s a first look at them! :D I wanted to do a slightly different take on the “Little Black Dress” thing, and I think it worked for me. :P

What I found really funny, though, was the attention my legs received. It’s like, “Guys, they’re legs. You have legs too.” XD

At this point, I’m still figuring out which dresses/outfits/concepts to shoot next. Maybe there’ll be more of my legs? HAHAHA

'Til next time, loves!

Cheers,
Vanessa

The Less Glamorous Side

I was going through my hard drive, trying to organize my photo folders. I stumbled on a folder of outtakes from one of my favorite shoots, shot by Luisa Manuel. My awesome makeup was done by Caz Buss of Amadeobeloved. Everything came together so nicely, and I loved all my shots.

I normally post “nice” photos from my shoots. That’s usually what everyone sees on my page, and I rarely put up my awkward outtakes. Here’s a sample of a “proper” shot:

That’s what most people expect to see when I say I had a photo shoot. What happens between the proper shots is this, though:

Yes. I turn into the most awkward creature ever. Awkward pose, awkward face, awkward EVERYTHING. And it gets progressively worse as the shoot goes on.

Awkward face is awkward. This was unintentional on my part. Sometimes I like making faces at other people who are at the shoot, too. I am very easily distracted.

I end up goofing off when I can’t think of any more poses.

So, what’s the point in me showing you all of my derp faces?

A lot of people tell me I look glamorous/refined in my photos, and some people seem to believe that I never have bad moments caught on camera during shoots. Here ya go, y’all. Awkward faces everywhere, from yours truly. XD

The next time you see someone’s glamorous, fixed-up shots, you know that there are probably a bunch of unflattering photos of them that may never see the light of day. XD

Love,
Vanessa
